The beauty of Astanga Vinyasa yoga is it’s flowing, dance-like sequences, held together on the thread of the breath.

The authentic name for this form of yoga is Astanga Vinyasa though it is currently widely publicized as Power yoga because of its energising nature and the high level of fitness which comes from practicing it.

Astanga yoga is far more than a workout. It is an art, creating a new relationship with the body. The rigorous discipline of the system gradually leads to mastery over all areas of one’s life. The practice is empowering and liberating.

Body postures (asanas) are synchronised with a controlled breathing system in a choreographed sequence. Constant, controlled activity is combined with a heightened energy level, toning the body into maximum fitness and giving it balance.

The basic practice is designed to realign the body therapeutically, freeing the muscular system and rebalancing the skeletal system. Through it the spine is reawakened and made lithe, yet also (as yogic texts describe) as “strong as a thunderbolt”.

Body postures are linked together by vinyasas (breath-synchronised movements), which create a deep, purifying heat, nourishing internal organs and eliminating toxins.

The nervous system is soothed and the blood purified, while internal cleansing takes place through the alchemy of breath and movement, releasing power and energy, which can be exhilarating.

Physiologically a complete fitness system, a remarkable combination of strength, flexibility and stamina follows, opening an exciting pathway to lifelong health, and a deep level of relaxation, which is accompanied by a sense of rejuvenation.
